People are looking for web space these days to host their personal web sites, blogs, small business site or product sales and order pages.
Most people turn to professional web hosting companies for this as the setting up of their own web server is a difficult task in technical terms and requires constant supervision to ensure that the server is not attacked or falls foul of the thousands of viruses that circulate in cyber space.
If you are looking for web space then there are many other considerations other than the actual space on the server itself. There are a growing number of free web hosts springing up on the Internet, and although they offer enough capacity for personal web sites and blogs, they are a non starter if your planned web site is in any way commercial – the risks are just too high.
It is not uncommon for web sites to completely disappear from free hosting. They have the power to take down a site they do not consider “suitable” with no explanation and they do this often. Some of them get their revenue from advertising but this is never usually enough to maintain the servers to a high level and ensure that they are loaded with all of the essential software that today’s web site developers require.
Another common term used is unlimited web space. This is to some extent a fallacy as it is impossible to offer users unlimited space. Think about it for a moment – if everyone was using unlimited space then the company would have to keep introducing new servers with new hard drives to cope with the demand.
There are two things to consider here. The first is that most users of web hosting never need unlimited hosting. In fact it is unlikely that they will use any more than 25% of the space they have been allotted by a fixed space web host. The second is that those who truly do require a significant amount of space would never use a shared account from a web host. They would either rent their own dedicated server or have their own servers installed.
Dedicated servers are really best left to the professionals as they require detailed technical knowledge to set them up and configure them properly to get the most out of them – they are expensive to rent so this is very important. Most people will use shared web hosting for their web sites and blogs. This is more than enough for their needs and these days most web hosting accounts are fully laden with more than enough space, bandwidth and other facilities.
For those of you in this position, it is far better to concentrate on the experience that the hosting company has along with the support offered rather than focus on the amount of disk space. Disk space can always be increased, poor service or disappearing web hosts are a different proposition.
