Web Site Hosting In Plain English

Help and advice on buying web site hosting.

Web site hosting gives you the ability to launch your own website on the Internet but this can be daunting, as the technical terminology that is used when trying to choose a web host, can be confusing. With the almost infinite number of hosting packages available it can be very confusing and time consuming choosing the right company. So what can you do?

The most important areas of web site hosting are as follows:

Reliability – You don’t want to spend a lot of time, money and effort creating your web site only to find that your site will be unavailable more than it is available to visitors on the Internet.

Host Experience – How many years has the hosting company been in the business? There are new companies springing up all of the time and offering amazingly low prices but these are best avoided in our experience.

Type Of Hosting Offered – The most popular type of hosting is Linux based but a lot of people use Microsoft products to create their web sites and in some cases they require Windows hosting. Most good hosts will offer both.

Web Space – This is the amount of storage space on the Internet that your host will give you. This is like hard drive space on your computer. In most cases the larger the space the better. However, most web sites are relatively small, so only purchase the amount of web space you really need.

Bandwidth Transfer – This is the amount of traffic (or visitors) that you have each month to your site. These days, most hosts offer more than sufficient bandwidth for most sites.

User Interface – The industry standard for this is software called CPanel. It is very easy to use and has training videos available for new users. Some hosts use copycat versions of CPanel which are sometimes more difficult to use and understand.

Domain Names – Every web site on the Internet has a unique address e.g. www.yoursite.com. A quality web host will provide a domain name setup service and some will even give you the name for free. If you think that you will be needing to add more web sites in the future then you need to choose a quality hosting package that offers support for multiple domain names.

Price – There is an old saying “You Get What You Pay For”. Many people have gone with free or very very cheap hosting only to wake up one day and find that their web site has disappeared and so have the hosting company. Price is important but it should not be your most critical factor. Always go for quality.

  • For the Web hosting provider, it really depends on your budget and what kind of hosting plan you’re looking for? Linux/Unix Based plan or Windows Based plan?
