VPS Hosting is a low cost solution that straddles the line between shared hosting and dedicated servers. The crux of it is, as far as a customer is concerned, it appears as a full-fledged server with its own operating system. But it is in fact one of several virtual partitions on one powerful dedicated server.
This physical server handles the VPS (virtual private servers). It makes sure that each client gets the resources necessary to maintain the illusion of being a stand alone server. The net effect is that each VPS has it’s own operating system installed and the flexibility to be configured with almost endless possibilites of software, and be rebooted whenever necessary.
All VPS Guests, as they are often known, are treated equal, so actions of one VPS do not in any way impact the others hosted on the physical server. Resource allocations are managed by the server, and so is the virtual hardware required by each VPS. This separates the clients from each other, and while they share the same physical server’s resources, it does not restrict them from having different operating systems or configurations.
The best part of using VPS Hosting is that it offers you the use of a server at a price more comparable to shared hosting than that of a dedicated server. Dedicated servers can cost hundreds of pounds a month. For small to medium sized businesses that have just outgrown shared hosting, it might not be a feasible option to make that kind of investment. The new solution on the block is, Virtual Private Servers.
Another huge advantage is the level of control that you can have with a VPS. Shared hosting has clearly marked parameters, and you cannot exceed things like a specific number of domains, email accounts, mysql databases etc. The bandwidth or other restrictions can often be limiting, and so are the types of scripts that can be run. The client has no control whatsoever over administration of the operating system, control panel or software loaded on the shared server.
With VPS, all these limitations are gone. You begin as a super user with root access to a clean server, and can do whatever you wish. There are no limitations or pre-defined choices required for the operating system, control panel software, etc.
Website hosting companies usually offer a choice of either managed or unmanaged VPS. Again, this is a grey area between shared hosting and dedicated servers. The unmanaged ones are like a dedicated server, and the user starts from scratch and gets to take care of the administration. Managed VPS is more like shared hosting, where the web host takes care of the administration and the customer simply has to use the installed control panel to manage their sites and services.
To sum it up, while VPS is not exactly a dedicated server, it does offer the same control and many of the same benefits, but without the cost. What this means is that if paying for a dedicated server is possible, well and good. If that is beyond your budget then VPS hosting is a very good alternative.
